Americus, GA – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested a second suspect in connection with the February 8, 2025, shooting at Eastview Apartments that resulted in the tragic death of 5-year-old Peyton Brielle Roberts and left two others injured.

On Thursday afternoon, GBI agents took 20-year-old Ny’Tavion Smith into custody on charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery.

Smith was arrested during the execution of a search warrant, coordinated by the GBI Special Operations Unit, the GBI regional investigative office in Americus, and the Americus Police Department.

His arrest comes days after GBI officials announced the arrest of 19-year-old Ricky Martin on Monday, who is facing similar charges of felony murder and aggravated assault in connection to the same shooting.

The deadly shooting occurred on Saturday, February 8, at approximately 8:30 p.m., when gunfire erupted at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Eastview Circle.

When officers arrived, they found multiple gunshot victims, including 5-year-old Peyton Brielle Roberts, who was critically wounded and later succumbed to her injuries at Phoebe Sumter Hospital.

A 19-year-old male victim was also shot and transported to Phoebe Sumter before being airlifted to another medical facility, where he remains in critical condition.

A third victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the hospital.

Both Smith and Martin are being held at the Sumter County Jail as the investigation remains ongoing.

Gunfire Erupts, Leaving a Child Dead and Others Wounded

The February 8 shooting at Eastview Apartments in Americus sent shockwaves through the community, as authorities revealed that a 5-year-old girl had been caught in the crossfire.

According to police reports, a hail of bullets rang out shortly after 8:30 p.m., prompting Americus Police officers to rush to the 600 block of Eastview Circle.

Upon arrival, officers found a scene of devastation—multiple gunshot victims, shattered glass, and residents in sheer panic.

At the center of it all was 5-year-old Peyton Roberts, suffering from a severe gunshot wound.

Emergency responders worked frantically to stabilize Peyton before rushing her to Phoebe Sumter Hospital. Unfortunately, despite extensive life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

A 19-year-old male victim, whose identity has not been released, was found in critical condition and was immediately airlifted to a higher-level trauma center for emergency surgery.

A third victim sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and was treated at a local hospital.

Chaos and Fear Gripped the Apartment Complex

Residents of Eastview Apartments described the terrifying moments when gunshots tore through the complex.

“I heard at least 15 to 20 gunshots. It sounded like it was right outside my window,” said one witness who asked to remain anonymous.
“Then I heard screaming. People were running everywhere. I saw a little girl lying on the ground.”

Another resident recalled the chaotic aftermath:

“The police got here fast, but by then, it was too late for that baby. She didn’t deserve this.”

Authorities sealed off the crime scene, collecting shell casings and forensic evidence, and began interviewing witnesses to determine what led to the shooting.

The Investigation: Tracking Down the Suspects

GBI and Americus PD Work Together to Find Those Responsible

In the days following the shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and Americus Police Department launched an intensive investigation to track down those responsible.

On Monday, February 10, authorities announced the arrest of Ricky Martin, 19, who was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault.

Then, on Thursday, February 13, investigators arrested Ny’Tavion Smith, 20, after executing a search warrant at an undisclosed location.

“The arrest of these individuals is a step toward justice for Peyton Roberts and her family,” said Americus Police Chief Mark Scott.
“This was a senseless act of violence, and we will not stop until everyone involved is held accountable.”

Authorities have not yet revealed the exact circumstances that led to the shooting, but early reports suggest the violence may have stemmed from an ongoing dispute.

Motive Still Under Investigation

While police have not confirmed the specific motive, sources suggest the shooting may have been gang-related or linked to a previous altercation.

“We are looking into whether this was a targeted attack gone wrong or if Peyton was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said a law enforcement official close to the investigation.

Family’s Grief: Remembering Peyton Roberts

A Life Cut Short

The tragic death of Peyton Brielle Roberts has left a devastated family mourning the loss of their beloved child.

Peyton’s mother, Ashley Roberts, spoke through tears in a heart-wrenching interview:

“My baby was full of life. She loved to dance, sing, and play with her little brother. Now she’s gone, and I don’t know how to go on without her.”

Family members described Peyton as a bright, joyful girl who had just started kindergarten and loved unicorns and drawing.

“She had her whole life ahead of her, and now she’s just another statistic of gun violence,” said Peyton’s grandmother.

Community Outrage and Calls for Justice

Vigils, Protests, and Demands for Change

The Americus community has come together to mourn Peyton and demand justice.

A candlelight vigil was held outside Phoebe Sumter Hospital, where dozens gathered, holding signs that read:

  • “Justice for Peyton”
  • “End Gun Violence”
  • “Our Children Deserve to Grow Up”

Local activists and community leaders have called on city officials to increase efforts to curb gun violence.

“This should never have happened. A 5-year-old should not be dying in her own home because of bullets flying outside,” said a local pastor.

Legal Proceedings: What Happens Next?

Both Ricky Martin and Ny’Tavion Smith remain in custody at the Sumter County Jail, awaiting their first court appearances.

If convicted, they could face:

  • Life in prison without parole
  • Additional charges if new evidence emerges

District Attorney Lewis Lamb has vowed to pursue the maximum penalty for those responsible.

“This was an unspeakable crime, and we intend to hold the perpetrators accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Final Thoughts: A City in Mourning, A Family Seeking Justice

The murder of 5-year-old Peyton Roberts has left a permanent scar on the Americus community.

As the legal process unfolds, Peyton’s family, friends, and neighbors continue to ask:

How many more innocent children have to die before something changes?

This remains an active investigation, and law enforcement urges anyone with additional information to contact the Americus Police Department or GBI tip line.

As the community mourns, the hope remains that justice for Peyton will be served.
