A birthday gathering in the North Bay Terraces neighborhood of San Diego turned into a scene of violence early Sunday morning when an unidentified suspect opened fire, striking a female attendee in the leg. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has launched a full-scale investigation to locate the shooter, who remains at large.
Incident Overview
According to the SDPD, officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire at approximately 2:26 a.m. at a residence on the 6900 block of Skyline Drive. Upon arrival, authorities found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her leg. Emergency medical responders transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Witnesses at the scene reported that the shooting occurred during a birthday party, attended by multiple guests, some of whom engaged in a heated altercation that escalated to gun violence. While it remains unclear if the victim was directly involved in the argument, police believe the shooting was not random.
Eyewitness Accounts and Suspect Description
Several partygoers provided descriptions of the suspect, who was last seen fleeing the scene in a red 2016-style two-door Jeep. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 5โ7โ tall and weighing around 180 pounds. At the time of the shooting, he was wearing a tan shirt and had a white cloth covering his face.
“It all happened so fast,” said one attendee who wished to remain anonymous. “One minute, people were having fun, and the next, there were screams and chaos. Everyone ran for cover when we heard the gunshot. We saw the suspect run off, but it was too dark to see clearly.”
Investigation and Law Enforcement Response
SDPD officers secured the crime scene and gathered statements from attendees, while forensic teams collected shell casings and other physical evidence. Authorities are currently reviewing security footage from surrounding residences and businesses in hopes of identifying the suspectโs vehicle more precisely.
โWe are actively following leads and urge anyone with information to come forward,โ said SDPD spokesperson Officer Miguel Ramirez. โIf you witnessed the shooting or saw a red Jeep in the area around that time, please contact our department or Crime Stoppers.โ
Community Concerns and Safety Measures
The North Bay Terraces neighborhood, typically a quiet residential area, has been rattled by the incident. Local residents have expressed concerns about growing violence in the community.
โItโs scary to think that something like this could happen so close to home,โ said longtime resident Maria Lopez. โWe need to make sure our neighborhood is safe for our children and families.โ
In response, law enforcement officials are increasing patrols in the area and encouraging residents to report any suspicious activity. Community leaders are also planning a meeting to discuss public safety measures and how to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Victimโs Condition and Public Reaction
Hospital officials have confirmed that the victim is in stable condition and is expected to recover fully. However, the emotional toll of the incident is significant.
Friends and family of the victim have taken to social media to express their outrage and call for justice. โThis should never have happened,โ one post read. โViolence has no place in our community. We hope the suspect is caught and held accountable.โ
