Chicago, IL – The city of Chicago is reeling after the devastating loss of 29-year-old Jamia Taylor, a mother of six, who was fatally shot near 79th Street and Bennett Avenue on the South Side on Saturday evening. Authorities confirmed that Taylor suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving her family and community in shock and mourning.
The fatal shooting occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m., according to the Chicago Police Department. Witnesses in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots before seeing Taylor collapse onto the sidewalk near the intersection. First responders arrived swiftly and attempted life-saving measures, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Taylor was a beloved mother, sister, and friend, known for her caring nature and dedication to her children. Her family has been left shattered by the tragic incident, as her six young children now face a future without their mother’s love and guidance.
“Jamia was everything to her kids,” said her cousin, Latasha Reynolds, while speaking to local reporters. “She worked hard to provide for them, and she didn’t deserve this. No mother should have to leave her babies behind like this.”
Authorities have yet to identify a suspect in the shooting, and as of Sunday morning, no arrests have been made. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling addressed the media, stating that investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and urging anyone with information to come forward.
“We are committed to finding those responsible for this heinous act,” Snelling said. “We ask that the community stands with us in bringing justice for Jamia Taylor and her grieving family.”
According to law enforcement, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. Detectives are exploring whether Taylor was the intended target or if the gunfire was a result of a stray bullet. Nearby residents described a chaotic scene, with some saying the neighborhood has seen an uptick in violence in recent months.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said longtime resident Marcus Daniels. “This community needs peace, but it feels like every other day we lose someone to senseless violence. That woman had kids. What are they going to do now?”
Taylor’s death adds to the growing number of gun-related fatalities in Chicago this year. According to the latest crime data, the city has witnessed a disturbing increase in shootings, with many victims being young parents like Taylor.
Her sister, Monique Taylor, made an emotional plea during a vigil held near the scene of the shooting on Sunday night. “Please, if you know anything, speak up. My sister was taken from us, and we need answers,” she urged.
Local activists, including members of ‘Mothers Against Violence Chicago,’ have also spoken out, calling for urgent reforms and better community intervention programs to prevent further tragedies. “We need more resources, more outreach, and more accountability,” said group leader Cynthia Morales. “Jamia’s children deserve justice, and we won’t stop fighting until they get it.”
Taylor’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses and provide support for her children.
